To paraphrase Ferris Bueller – “Life moves pretty fast on the rugby pitch”. No other sport has the equivalent number of players on the field with so few officials. In Rugby there is one official, always addressed as Sir or Ma’am, and 30 players playing for 2 40-minute halves.

I used to get paid good money to go to parties. In fact I made it my business to never miss the biggest and best parties at the University of Missouri. Of course I wasn’t there solely to have fun, I was paid to be there as a Party Pic photographer.

A great breakaway forcing a missed tackle and an Old Gold player is on his way to another try.

This summer at a rugby match I was watching an formerly good player play a position at which he once excelled, but was now half a step too slow to be consistently effective. His play calling was perfect and he found the defensive holes to exploit, but now instead of getting his passes off cleanly, he was getting tackled and losing scoring opportunities.  He was at a point in his career when he needed to share his expertise from the sidelines as a coach and let someone else step into his role as a team captain.

Recently I was labeling some bulk spices in the kitchen larder using a P-Touch Labeler  – can you tell the difference between fennel seed and caraway seed, well neither can I without a label –  And I thought about the times, places, whys and whens I’ve used a P-Touch Labeler and what I put on those labels.

Saying these two words is almost as much fun as hearing them.

You always remember your first hire, especially when ultimately it’s your decision to make, and not one made by a hiring committee. Being promoted into a managerial role is a big step in every career – in addition to more responsibility, the work is usually more interesting and sometimes the pay and benefits are better.
